EUNIC Public Online Debate: Culture and the Sustainable Development Goals: Where Are We Now?

With only ten years left to realise the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the value of arts and culture for the achievement of the SDGs could be better understood, evidenced and embedded in policy and practice. In this event, we will discuss the cultural dimension of sustainable development and how the goals can serve the cultural sector at home and abroad. How can policy makers, public bodies and the cultural sector work together on cultural policies and programmes that contribute to the SDGs?

The online debate is co-hosted with EUNIC members ifa (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen) and the British Council. Gabriella Fesus, Head of Unit, DEVCO B4 Culture, Education and Health, will open the meeting. This will be followed by a keynote address by Gijs de Vries, author of the recently published ifa study "Culture in the Sustainable Development Goals. The Role of the European Union". The report takes stock of the EU’s progress in reaching the cultural goals of Agenda 2030 and provides tangible recommendations.

The keynote will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A. Speakers include: Ayeta Wangusa, Executive Director of Culture and Development East Africa; Elena Polivtseva, Head of Policy and Research at IETM (International network for contemporary performing arts); Rosanna Lewis, Culture and Development lead at the British Council. The panel will be moderated by Gitte Zschoch, EUNIC Director.
